Ash is drawn into another crisis when Princess Sia asks Team Shadow Prince to travel beyond Egypt in search of Prince Rami. Their journey takes them into Kush, where Set has persuaded Apedemak, the lion-headed god of war, to gather an army of the living and the dead for an invasion of Egypt. The mission forces Ash and his friends to cross a political and cultural frontier rather than face danger within the royal capital alone.

In Kush they encounter new forms of magic, including a boy whose power is channelled through henna markings, while the threat of war transforms the series’ mythological conflict into a struggle between kingdoms. The novel retains the alternate Fourth Dynasty setting established around Prince Khufu but broadens the geography to ancient Nubia and the Kingdom of Kush, combining Egyptian and Kushite religious traditions in a deliberately fantastical chronology.
