In a fantastical version of Old Kingdom Egypt, twelve-year-old Ash learns that he was born on the same day as Prince Khufu and is therefore eligible to compete for the position of the prince’s shadow—his companion, protector and future bodyguard. Taken from his desert village to the royal capital, Ash enters five days of tests overseen by Egyptian gods, where magic, monsters and rival candidates turn the competition into a fight for survival.
Ash forms his first real friendships with other competitors as the trials reveal a larger threat to the kingdom. Set, god of chaos, is working to make the contest fail, forcing Ash to choose between personal victory and protecting Khufu and Egypt itself. The novel blends children’s adventure, Egyptian mythology and historical fantasy with a deliberately alternate, solar-powered vision of the Fourth Dynasty.
