Frank Crosse and Maude Selby marry and begin the practical work of building a household together. Their life is shaped less by a single dramatic plot than by a sequence of recognisable pressures: money, relatives, jealousy, misunderstandings, social obligations and the adjustment from courtship to married companionship.
Conan Doyle treats the marriage as a domestic study, following small quarrels and reconciliations with an interest in how affection survives ordinary friction. The result is a late-Victorian social novel about partnership and expectations inside an apparently conventional middle-class marriage.
