Spanish American Wars of Independence
1808–1833 CE
The Spanish American Wars of Independence grew from the crisis created by Napoleon’s invasion of Spain in 1808 and the collapse of recognised royal authority. Juntas and political movements across the Americas first claimed local sovereignty in the absent king’s name, but many struggles developed into wars for full independence.
The conflicts differed sharply by region. Patriots and royalists fought across Mexico, Venezuela, New Granada, the Río de la Plata, Chile, Peru and other territories, while local rivalries, racial hierarchies, slavery, trade and competing constitutional projects shaped each campaign. By the 1820s most of mainland Spanish America had become independent, although warfare and Spanish resistance continued in some areas.
The later Aubrey–Maturin novels move from the Napoleonic world into these struggles. The Wine-Dark Sea uses revolutionary organisation in Peru, while Blue at the Mizzen places its naval and political mission within Chile’s fight against Spanish rule.
