Set in the late medieval Holy Roman Empire, The Castle of Ehrenstein is built around a fortified household, disputed loyalties and the consequences of feud in a political world where authority is divided among princes, nobles, cities and imperial institutions. James uses the castle as both refuge and trap: family secrets and romantic obligations matter because armed retainers and neighbouring powers can turn private hostility into open conflict.

The setting reflects a central feature of the medieval Empire—the absence of a single authority capable of resolving every local dispute quickly. Rights of inheritance, lordship and service therefore become practical questions of power. James combines Gothic atmosphere with historical romance, but the dangers are grounded in feudal politics rather than the supernatural. The result is a story in which lineage and possession determine who may command, marry, inherit or be treated as an enemy.
