Set in the fifth century as Roman authority in western Europe is weakening, Attila places its fictional drama inside the expansion of the Hunnic Empire. James presents a world of imperial officials, warriors, threatened communities and competing rulers forced to respond to the power gathered around Attila. Long-distance movement and uncertain frontiers give the novel a scale very different from his court romances: the danger comes from the instability of an entire political order as much as from any single antagonist.

Attila’s campaigns brought the Huns into direct conflict with both halves of the Roman Empire and culminated in major operations in Gaul and Italy. James uses that pressure to explore loyalty in a society where old institutions still command respect but can no longer guarantee security. Warfare, diplomacy and personal relationships unfold against the larger question of what remains when imperial power begins to fail.
