Vlad III the Impaler

c. 1428/31–1476/77

Vlad III, later known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula, was a fifteenth-century voivode of Wallachia and a son of Vlad II Dracul. Born sometime between 1428 and 1431, he spent part of his youth as an Ottoman hostage before entering the dynastic struggle for the Wallachian throne. He ruled on three occasions, most importantly from 1456 to 1462, attempting to strengthen princely authority against rival boyars while manoeuvring between the much larger powers of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire.

Vlad’s campaign against Sultan Mehmed II in 1461–62 included raids south of the Danube and the famous night attack on the Ottoman camp. His extensive use of impalement as exemplary terror became central to contemporary hostile accounts, particularly German pamphlets, although surviving sources were produced by interested enemies and admirers. After years in Hungarian custody he briefly regained Wallachia in 1476 and was killed late that year or early in 1477. His historical epithet Dracula derives from his father’s association with the Order of the Dragon; the later vampire connection is a separate literary development.

Peter Darman’s Boyar, Kingmaker, Heathen and Homeland make Vlad a recurring power on the Hungarian–Wallachian frontier, filtering his career through the fictional mercenary Leon Muller. M. J. Trow’s non-fiction Vlad the Impaler addresses the ruler behind the later Dracula legend. The linked fiction deliberately heightens Vlad’s menace, so its violence and private motives should be separated from what contemporary sources can actually establish.
