The Redemption series begins in the final months of the Second World War and follows two people marked by opposite sides of the Nazi catastrophe: Axel Steiner, a German soldier, and Hannah Katz, a Hungarian Jewish survivor of the Holocaust. Herrenvolk brings their lives together amid the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945.

Out of the Ashes moves the story into the post-war world, following displacement, Jewish migration to Palestine and the fighting that accompanies the creation of Israel in 1948. The two novels use a continuing personal relationship to explore survival, guilt, forgiveness and the difficulty of building a future after ideological and racial violence.
