Three brothers travel into central Idaho in 1906 after a dramatic gold strike turns an isolated mountain district into a boom camp. They hope that the new diggings will offer a fortune, but rapid wealth also brings claim disputes, speculation, fraud and men prepared to use violence to control the richest ground.

The brothers’ ambitions are tested as the camp grows around them and money begins to alter relationships that had seemed secure. The novel uses the unstable life of a gold rush—temporary settlements, uncertain ownership and sudden reversals of fortune—to show how quickly opportunity can become a source of rivalry within both a community and a family.
