On the Arizona–Mexico border in the early twentieth century, Dick Gale becomes involved with a group trying to protect a young woman from men pursuing her out of revolutionary Mexico. The flight takes them into desert country where heat, scarce water and long distances can be as dangerous as armed enemies.

The Mexican Revolution gives the borderlands an atmosphere of unstable authority and divided loyalties, but the central struggle is also personal: Gale must prove that he can endure the landscape and defend people who have come to depend on him. Pursuit, romance and survival are therefore tied closely to a frontier where political violence crosses an international boundary that remains difficult to police.
