Henry Ireton was a Parliamentarian soldier and politician who rose to senior command during the English Civil War. He became closely associated with Oliver Cromwell and married Cromwell’s daughter Bridget in 1646. Ireton was also an important political voice within the New Model Army and took part in debates over the constitutional settlement after the defeat of Charles I.
Ireton later served in Ireland and died at Limerick in November 1651 while commanding Commonwealth forces. In Miranda Malins’s The Rebel Daughter, he appears under his own historical identity as Bridget Cromwell’s husband and as a figure whose political convictions shape her life. Private dialogue and domestic scenes are necessarily imaginative reconstruction.
