Bridget Cromwell was born in 1624, the eldest daughter of Oliver Cromwell and Elizabeth Bourchier to survive into adulthood. She grew up as her father’s political and military career accelerated during the English Civil War. In 1646 she married Henry Ireton, a senior Parliamentarian officer and close political ally of Cromwell.
After Ireton’s death at Limerick in 1651, Bridget married Charles Fleetwood, another prominent Parliamentarian soldier, in 1652. Her marriages placed her close to the military and political leadership of the Commonwealth. Miranda Malins makes Bridget the central historical figure of The Rebel Daughter; dialogue, private motives and undocumented incidents are imaginative reconstruction rather than a complete biography.
