Battle of Bråvellir

The Battle of Bråvellir, also rendered Bråvalla or Brávellir, belongs to the legendary history of early medieval Scandinavia. Later Norse and Danish sources describe a vast conflict involving Harald Wartooth and warriors drawn from across the northern world. The surviving accounts were written centuries after the supposed battle, so its date, location and even historicity remain uncertain.

The episode appears in saga material including Sögubrot, Hervarar saga and later in Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum. The enormous armies and famous heroes attached to the story clearly belong partly to literary tradition, but the legend may preserve memories of real rivalry among Scandinavian rulers during the centuries before the Viking Age.

Theodore Brun makes Bråvellir the climax of A Sacred Storm and openly treats it as a movement from myth into legend rather than secure documentary history.
