After Elizabeth

by Leanda de Lisle

First published 2005

3.6(47)

Leanda de Lisle focuses on the unstable year from the closing months of Elizabeth I’s reign to the consolidation of James VI of Scotland as James I of England. With an ageing, childless queen refusing publicly to settle the succession, courtiers, Catholic factions and foreign observers calculated how power might be redistributed after her death. Robert Cecil’s secret correspondence with James helped prepare a transition that could easily have produced disorder or rival claims.

The narrative follows Elizabeth’s death in March 1603, James’s proclamation and journey south, and the political disappointments that accompanied the new king’s arrival. De Lisle also examines the religious divisions, court competition and Anglo-Scottish tensions that shaped the accession. Rather than treating 1603 as an automatic dynastic handover, the book reconstructs a precarious transfer of power at the boundary between the Tudor and Stuart periods.
