Erlan leaves Scandinavia and travels towards Constantinople in search of release from the past, only to be betrayed and sold into slavery to a Byzantine general. Lilla, now dispossessed of her kingdom, follows east in the hope of finding Erlan and securing the military support needed to recover her throne. Their separate journeys converge in the Byzantine capital at a moment of court intrigue and mounting external danger.

The third Wanderer Chronicle moves decisively into documented history as the Umayyad army of Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik closes on Constantinople in 717 and Emperor Leo III prepares the city’s defence. Brun embeds his fictional protagonists within the Second Arab Siege of Constantinople, combining the political and military crisis with the series’ continuing elements of myth, personal redemption and supernatural unease.
