Coromandel!
England, 1627. Jason Savage, an illiterate Wiltshire farm boy, becomes obsessed with a bloodstained map promising adventure and treasure far beyond the life laid out for him. Leaving home, he is drawn through London and onto the sea, beginning a journey that takes him into the trading world of the Indian Ocean and eventually to the Coromandel Coast.
Jason’s progress through ships, ports, courts and conflict places an ordinary Englishman inside the early commercial encounter between Europe and Mughal India. The novel combines maritime adventure with the hazards of seventeenth-century travel, using the first Savage ancestor to open Masters’s long fictional history of British involvement in the subcontinent.
