Far, Far the Mountain Peak
Beginning at Cambridge in 1902, Peter Savage decides that success must be achieved at any cost. He enters the Indian Civil Service and turns mountaineering into another arena for ambition, drawing friends, rivals and the woman he marries into a life organised around his determination to dominate both career and mountain.
The story spans the years before and during the First World War and returns repeatedly to India, where early nationalism, imperial administration and the lure of the Himalayas shape Peter’s choices. War and personal disaster gradually expose the damage caused by his ruthlessness, turning a story of achievement into a study of ambition, marriage and the possibility of self-knowledge.
