Nightrunners of Bengal

In 1857 Captain Rodney Savage serves with a Bengal Native Infantry regiment in the fictional city of Bhowani. Long accustomed to the routines and loyalties of the East India Company’s army, he finds those assumptions collapsing as mutiny becomes rebellion and military units, princely interests and civilian communities are forced to choose sides.

Savage’s knowledge of India does not protect him from the violence or uncertainty of the uprising. As British authority fractures and reprisals harden attitudes on both sides, the novel follows soldiers and civilians through siege, flight and divided loyalty, placing one generation of the Savage family inside the upheaval of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
