City of Gold

by Len Deighton

4.2(1,206)

Cairo, 1942. British forces are under pressure from Rommel’s advance, and military intelligence believes someone inside the Allied establishment is passing valuable information to the Germans. Captain Albert Cutler is pulled into the search as the city fills with officers, diplomats, businessmen, refugees and opportunists trying to survive a war whose front line is moving dangerously close.

The investigation turns wartime Cairo into a city of false identities and competing loyalties. Deighton combines the North African campaign with a spy mystery in which military defeat, corruption and personal ambition make it difficult to distinguish treason from ordinary self-preservation.
