Louis Armstrong

1901–1971

Louis Armstrong grew up in New Orleans and developed as a cornet and trumpet player before joining influential ensembles in Chicago and New York. His Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings helped establish the soloist as a central voice in jazz.

Armstrong became an international celebrity through recordings, film and touring. Historical fiction set in the 1920s may place fictional characters near his performances, but private conversations or personal involvement require clear treatment as invention.
