Nore Mutiny

In May 1797 sailors at the Nore formed a coordinated mutiny after unrest had already produced concessions at Spithead. The Nore demands included improved conditions but also wider political claims that alarmed the government.

The mutineers attempted to control movements in the Thames and imposed their own fleet organisation. Support weakened under blockade and internal division, and the mutiny ended with arrests, executions and harsh punishment.

Mutiny places Thomas Kydd between loyalty to the service and solidarity with fellow sailors. The historical crisis tests whether naval discipline can command obedience when the grievances beneath rebellion are genuine.
