Trease shows how military conflict depended on civilian resources and fractured local relationships. The story gives younger readers a direct view of Royalist and Parliamentarian claims without making war itself adventurous or clean.

Civil war reaches communities through requisitioned horses, billeted soldiers, divided churches and relatives choosing different sides long before a major battle appears.
