In 1415 Henry V prepares to renew England’s war in France, but intelligence suggests that French agents are trying to revive Scotland’s alliance with their kingdom. The king sends Thomas Chaucer and the veteran archer Robert Cooper north to intercept money intended to finance a Scottish attack. Their mission turns the opening of the campaign into a contest of couriers, informants and concealed loyalties.
A second plot remains in London, where the man-at-arms Edward Fordham must identify an assassin targeting someone essential to the invasion. Foreman places fictional soldiers and spies around the historical king and Thomas Chaucer, showing that armies depend upon political security and information before they ever embark. The novel introduces a company whose private loyalties will be tested throughout the Agincourt campaign.
