Turpin pursues James Skinner, the rival outlaw who killed his friend Tobias Vardy. Accompanied by Nathaniel Gill, he returns to London and asks the fence Joseph Colman to locate the murderer. Colman agrees only in exchange for a service, drawing Turpin into a bargain whose hidden motives make revenge more dangerous than the original crime.
As the search moves through taverns, safe houses and criminal contacts, Turpin learns that Skinner and Colman are connected in ways he did not expect. Killing his rival may endanger his companions and expose him to the authorities. The second novel uses the historical outlaw’s reputation as the basis for a story about criminal loyalty, the corrosive force of vengeance and the narrow distance between legend and an unmarked grave.
