The plan requires manners, deception and patience from a man more accustomed to speed and intimidation.

Turpin discovers that he is not the only person seeking the diamond and that seduction creates obligations he did not intend to honour. The country-house setting brings the highwayman into direct contact with the wealth his crimes usually encounter only in coaches. The novel explores social ambition and romantic vulnerability while keeping the danger of exposure, betrayal and execution close to every stage of the robbery.
