In the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942, Adam Duritz serves in the Jewish police and is ordered to choose five people each day for deportation to Treblinka. Refusal will place him among the victims. Thomas Abendroth, a German soldier struggling to retain a sense of humanity, befriends Adam even as both men remain implicated in the system controlling the ghetto.

Adam’s hope centres on saving Jessica Rubenstein, but personal rescue cannot be separated from the suffering surrounding them. Rival officials, informers and desperate residents make every choice dangerous, and the relationship between Adam and Thomas attracts enemies on both sides of the imposed hierarchy. The novel examines love, complicity and moral survival under Nazi persecution without suggesting that individual decency can overcome the machinery of deportation.
