Helen Sanford is a hardworking nurse whose practical manner and modest background place her far from the privileged world of Sebastian Trewby, an aristocratic artist serving as an officer. Their first encounters are uneasy, but wartime London brings them together and an intense relationship develops despite class expectations and the knowledge that military orders may separate them at any moment.
The war carries both Helen and Sebastian towards the Somme, where battlefield medicine, mass casualties and the strain of command transform their private hopes. Helen is also concealing her German family background at a time of mounting suspicion and hostility. When a violent crime draws that secret into the open, their romance becomes entangled with military discipline, prejudice and the unequal risks imposed by class and nationality.
