Dusk and Dawn is a two-volume First World War romance centred on Helen Sanford, a young nurse of German heritage, and Sebastian Trewby, an aristocratic artist drawn into military service. Their relationship begins in wartime London and is tested by class difference, the Battle of the Somme, battlefield medicine and the demands placed on officers, nurses and their families.

The duet then returns to London in the autumn of 1916, where Helen faces hostility and official suspicion while Sebastian prepares to rejoin his flying squadron. By moving between the home front, the Western Front and the early air war, the sequence explores how total war turns ancestry, reputation and private loyalty into matters of public danger. The author describes the pair as a First World War duet.
