The Crimson Chalice Trilogy

The Crimson Chalice Trilogy reimagines the Arthurian story in Britain after the end of Roman rule. Rather than reproducing the courts, armour and chivalric conventions of later medieval romance, Victor Canning places the origins of Arthur—called Arturo—among Romano-British communities, Celtic rulers, Saxon settlement and the struggle to assemble effective resistance in the fifth century.

The first novel follows Arturo’s parents and the passage of a sacred chalice into his inheritance; the second traces his youth, rebellion and formation of a war band; the third follows alliance-building, marriage, warfare and his final wounding. Historical reconstruction and legend are deliberately combined. The trilogy gives readers a speculative picture of post-Roman society while showing how figures such as Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere and Lancelot might have grown from early British conflict into enduring myth.
