Second Anglo-Dutch War

1665–1667

The Second Anglo-Dutch War arose from rivalry over shipping, trade and overseas possessions. English privateers, the Royal Navy and the Dutch Republic’s fleets fought in the North Sea and across imperial sea routes.

The war included major fleet battles and the Dutch Raid on the Medway in 1667. The Treaty of Breda ended the conflict while confirming important colonial and commercial changes.
