The Sikh Wars recounts the two nineteenth-century conflicts between the Sikh Empire of Punjab and the British East India Company. It explains the political instability that followed the death of Ranjit Singh, the power of the Khalsa army and the tensions along the Sutlej frontier. The book follows the major battles of 1845–46 and 1848–49 before tracing the annexation of Punjab and the consequences for Sikh soldiers, rulers and British expansion in India.

The wars followed the death of Ranjit Singh and the weakening of the political balance that had held the Sikh Empire together. The Khalsa army remained formidable even as court faction and British expansion increased instability along the Sutlej. The book therefore considers battlefield performance alongside the internal political crisis that allowed East India Company victory to end in annexation rather than a simple frontier settlement.
