History of India provides a broad survey of the subcontinent from ancient civilisation through medieval kingdoms and empires to colonial rule and the modern nation-state. It covers major political changes alongside the development of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Sikhism, long-distance trade and regional cultures. The book follows the Mauryas, Delhi Sultanate, Mughals and British Raj before turning to nationalism, independence and the creation of modern India.
The breadth of the survey makes regional variation essential. Political centres rise in the Gangetic plain, Deccan and south at different times, while maritime trade connects coastal societies with the wider Indian Ocean world. Colonial rule is therefore presented as one major transformation within a much longer history rather than the organising framework through which all earlier periods are interpreted.
