Shapur I

c. 3rd century–272

Shapur I ruled the Sasanian Empire from about AD 240 to 270 and greatly expanded Persian power against Rome. He captured major cities, defeated several Roman emperors and took Valerian prisoner at Edessa in 260, an unprecedented humiliation preserved in royal rock reliefs. Shapur also supported urban development and religious communities while presenting himself as king of kings of Iran and non-Iran. His conquests reshaped the balance of power in the Near East.

Shapur is a major opponent in Harry Sidebottom’s Warrior of Rome series, which follows Roman defence of the eastern provinces. Historical fiction often views him through Roman soldiers and therefore as an external menace. Persian evidence and the empire’s administrative sophistication allow a fuller portrayal of a ruler pursuing his own universal imperial claims.

In Harry Sidebottom’s Fire in the East, Shapur I of Persia is advancing through Roman territory, and Ballista must repair the defences, organise a divided population and prepare an uncertain garrison for siege. In Harry Sidebottom’s Lion of the Sun, in AD 260 the Roman eastern army collapses and Emperor Valerian is captured by Shapur I at Edessa. Other novels featuring Shapur I include Valerio Massimo Manfredi’s Empire of Dragons.

In non-fiction, Shapur I is discussed in Nick Holmes’s The Roman Revolution. Nick Holmes’s The Roman Revolution approaches the subject through empire, conquest and resistance, religion, belief and institutional authority, and social change and the pressures of ordinary life.
