Spanish Republican Exile to Chile
August–September 1939
The defeat of the Spanish Republic in early 1939 drove hundreds of thousands of civilians and combatants into France, where many were confined in improvised camps. Chilean poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda helped organise a passage to Chile for refugees selected to rebuild their lives beyond Europe.
The cargo ship Winnipeg sailed from France in August 1939 carrying more than two thousand passengers and arrived at Valparaíso in September. The refugees included workers, professionals, artists and families whose arrival permanently influenced Chilean culture, industry and politics.
A Long Petal of the Sea follows Victor Dalmau and Roser Bruguera from the Spanish Civil War onto the Winnipeg and into Chilean exile. The specific context links the novel’s European opening to its long Chilean aftermath without treating the entire book as only a Spanish Civil War narrative.
