William Shakespeare

1564–1616

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor whose career with the Lord Chamberlain’s Men and King’s Men transformed the commercial theatre of late Tudor and early Stuart London.

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare worked in London as an actor, shareholder and dramatist. His company performed at the Theatre, the Globe, court and private venues, and his plays addressed monarchy, succession, family conflict and political violence while remaining dependent on patronage and official permission. In Philip Gooden’s Nick Revill mysteries, Shakespeare is Nick’s playwright, colleague and uncertain patron. Each case is structured around a play including Hamlet, Richard II, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Troilus and Cressida, Romeo and Juliet, or a court masque, allowing theatrical plots to influence how Nick interprets real crimes.

Peter Ackroyd’s A Brief Guide to William Shakespeare introduces Shakespeare’s life, theatrical world and surviving works for readers approaching them for the first time. In Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet, Agnes Hathaway, a gifted healer with an instinctive understanding of plants and people, marries William Shakespeare, a young Latin tutor struggling beneath his father’s authority. Further fictional perspectives on William Shakespeare can be found in Philip Gooden’s Sleep of Death, Eve EdwardsThe Rogue’s Princess, Philip Gooden’s Death of Kings, Geoffrey Trease’s Cue for Treason, and Philip Gooden’s Alms for Oblivion.
