Book
In the Midst of Winter
First published 2017
A minor traffic accident during a Brooklyn snowstorm brings university professor Richard Bowmaster, his Chilean colleague Lucía Maraz and undocumented Guatemalan worker Evelyn Ortega into a dangerous problem involving a body hidden in a car. Their attempt to respond forces each of them to disclose a history previously kept private.
Lucía’s memories of political violence and exile in Chile and Brazil connect the contemporary crime to Latin America’s Cold War dictatorships. The novel balances suspense with the later-life possibility of affection, using migration and shared responsibility to bring three isolated people into an improvised family.
