Inés Suárez leaves sixteenth-century Spain for the Americas in search of her missing husband and discovers a life beyond the limits of her provincial upbringing. In Peru she becomes the companion of Pedro de Valdivia and joins his expedition south into Chile.
Narrated as an account of conquest and survival, the novel follows the founding and defence of Santiago, Spanish expansion and Mapuche resistance. Inés emerges as healer, organiser, fighter and settler, while the story also exposes the ambition and brutality through which colonial Chile was established.
