Eva Luna is born into poverty in an unnamed South American country and survives through domestic service, friendship and an instinctive gift for storytelling. Her path crosses that of Rolf Carlé, a European refugee whose work as a journalist draws him toward guerrilla war and political violence.

As Eva turns experience into stories, she gains control over a life repeatedly shaped by employers, soldiers, revolutionaries and lovers. The novel combines a coming-of-age narrative with the atmosphere of twentieth-century Latin American dictatorship, showing imagination as both livelihood and resistance.
