In the Edwardian years, the young James Dunbar goes to sea aboard the merchant ship Swallow and reaches the Mexican port of Puerto San Martin. There he falls in love with Conchita and encounters a waterfront shaped by poverty, trafficking, commercial rivalry and violence rather than the romantic maritime world he had imagined.
Dunbar’s emotional and artistic awakening develops alongside his education as a seaman. His attachment to Conchita and his observations of port life force him to decide whether beauty can be separated from exploitation, and whether an outsider can intervene without worsening the dangers faced by those who live there.
