In December 1939 the German pocket battleship *Admiral Graf Spee* was intercepted off South America by the British cruisers *Exeter*, *Ajax* and *Achilles*. The engagement damaged all four ships, but British Commodore Henry Harwood’s squadron succeeded in driving the German vessel into neutral Montevideo, where diplomatic pressure and misleading intelligence shaped the next stage of the confrontation.

The study reconstructs the battle, the damage sustained by the ships and Captain Hans Langsdorff’s decision to scuttle *Graf Spee* rather than attempt a breakout. By following both the fighting at sea and the diplomatic contest in Uruguay, it explains why an indecisive tactical engagement became an important early British success in the Second World War.
