Gaius Julius Vindex was the Roman governor of Gallia Lugdunensis who rebelled against Nero in AD 68. He supported Galba as an alternative emperor but was defeated by forces under Verginius Rufus near Vesontio and took his own life. Although his revolt failed militarily, it helped trigger the chain of events that ended Nero’s reign and began the Year of the Four Emperors.
Vindex appears in novels about Nero’s fall and the civil wars of AD 68–69, including later volumes of Robert Fabbri’s Vespasian series. Fiction commonly presents his rebellion as evidence that provincial commanders no longer regarded the Julio-Claudian emperor as secure or legitimate.
In Conn Iggulden’s Inferno, when Vindex rebels in Gaul and Galba is proclaimed by his troops, provincial armies turn imperial discontent into a struggle for the throne and Nero faces the collapse of the dynasty built around him.
