At the end of the Second World War, decorated officer Matthew Wallingham leaves hospital blind and uncertain what place remains for him in civilian life. His nurse Liz has helped him through the first stages of recovery, but returning to the family estate exposes illness, an unhappy marriage and resentment from the younger brother who managed the farm throughout the war.
