In 1903, Giles leaves England to resume his archaeological work in Egypt, abandoning Kitty with their infant son and the burden of governing Ashmore Castle. Still uncertain of her husband’s love, Kitty must keep the household functioning and prove that she can become its true mistress, even while concealing a disturbing secret of her own.

Rachel and Alice continue relationships that defy family expectations, while Richard’s new business venture is encouraged by his clandestine lover. Below stairs, a serious crime and the accusation of a servant spread mistrust through the household. Kitty’s attempt to hold the castle together becomes a test of judgment and independence, as marriage, status and reputation threaten to collapse around her.
