On a summer morning in 1960s Northumberland, Brid Stevens and Joe Lloyd meet on the coast before beginning the day’s work. Their private understanding is interrupted by an accusation that places Joe under suspicion and draws the surrounding families into a rapidly escalating conflict.

The events of a single day expose resentments, sexual jealousy and the violence concealed beneath familiar routines. What begins as a moment of freedom at dawn becomes a test of whether Brid and Joe can resist the judgements of a community eager to decide guilt before hearing the truth.

The compressed timescale makes the surrounding community especially important. Work, reputation and family knowledge circulate quickly in a place where neighbours have known one another for years, so an accusation can become accepted truth before evidence is tested. The 1960s setting adds a changing social world in which younger characters expect greater personal freedom than the community’s older assumptions easily allow.
