Historical person
Saint Mungo
Saint Mungo, also known as Kentigern, was an early Christian missionary traditionally associated with the foundation of Glasgow. Medieval hagiography places his ministry in the kingdom of Strathclyde during the sixth century.
The surviving stories were written long after his lifetime and combine history, legend and miracle. Mungo became Glasgow’s patron saint, and symbols from his legends remain part of the city’s coat of arms.
