Westfield’s Men recruit the actor Francis Quilter just as the company’s growing success begins to attract new complications. Francis’s father Gerard is on trial for the murder of an enemy and insists that he has been falsely accused. Nicholas Bracewell undertakes to test the evidence, even though his determination to help the Quilters creates friction inside the troupe.
The investigation moves between London’s theatrical world and the legal and criminal networks surrounding the murder. Rehearsals and performances continue while Bracewell traces witnesses whose reputations make them easy to dismiss. The case forces the company to decide how far loyalty to one of its own should extend when the evidence appears to support a conviction. The theatrical company itself becomes both an investigative network and a source of pressure, since scandal involving one actor can damage the livelihood of everyone sharing the stage.
