Caracalla’s Germanic Campaign, 213

In 213 Caracalla travelled to the Rhine and Danube regions and led operations against Germanic groups, including peoples later associated with the Alamanni. The campaign combined battle, negotiation, payments and imperial display.

The frontier army was central to Caracalla’s political legitimacy, and the emperor cultivated an image of physical endurance and closeness to ordinary soldiers. Rival commands and uncertain intelligence nevertheless made the region dangerous for agents operating between forts and tribal territories.
