Dacia, AD 101. Trajan begins the war that Domitian failed to finish, driving Roman armies towards the mountain passes controlling the kingdom of Decebalus. Tiberius Claudius Maximus, newly assigned to the auxiliary cavalry, returns to terrain associated with an earlier defeat and with memories he has tried to master.
Maximus’s speed and skill make him valuable for reconnaissance, pursuit and communication across a campaign in which roads, rivers and fortified heights decide movement. As Trajan seeks a victory worthy of a new emperor, Maximus is drawn towards the Iron Gates and the enemy king whose capture will later define his reputation. The novel views imperial glory from the saddle of a soldier required to earn it.
