Constantinople, 1203–1204. Arnau and the Templars enter the Byzantine capital as the Fourth Crusade abandons its original purpose and becomes entangled in the claims of Alexios IV Angelos. The immense city offers relics, wealth and political opportunity to crusaders already divided by debt and ambition.
As Enrico Dandolo and the western leaders tighten their hold over events, Arnau sees negotiation give way to assault and the sack of Constantinople. Protecting people and sacred objects places him against men who share his faith and nominal cause. The novel treats the City of God as both a wonder of Christendom and the victim of a crusade turned against it.
