Chartist Movement

1838–1857 CE

The Chartist movement formed around the People’s Charter of 1838, which demanded reforms including universal male suffrage, secret ballots and payment for MPs. It mobilised working people through local associations, newspapers, conventions and enormous national petitions.

Most Chartist activity was peaceful, but government fears of insurrection produced surveillance, arrests and military preparations, especially around the Newport Rising and the demonstrations of 1848.
